According to a new report from PWInsider, Impact Wrestling is about to undergo a creative shake-up as two key Impact talents are on their way out of the promotion.
The report notes former Impact X-Division Champion Sonjay Dutt, who has been an important member of the Impact creative team, is finishing up with the company. The belief amongst many backstage in Impact Wrestling is that Dutt is heading to WWE and will begin there shortly.
Another top name exiting Impact Wrestling is last year’s Hall of Fame inductee Abyss. Also known as “The Monster”, Abyss is the only remaining TNA/Impact Wrestling original still with the company, and is currently the longest tenured talent on the Impact roster, having signed with the company back in 2002. It’s being said Abyss is also on his way to WWE along with Sonjay Dutt.
Because Abyss was helping out with creative backstage in Impact, and Sonjay Dutt was a key creative team member, Impact Wrestling is moving Konnan, who is currently an on-air personality, into a creative position. Along with Konnan, ECW original Tommy Dreamer, who works with Impact off-and-on, has been moved to the Impact creative team in order to fill the gaps left by the departing Abyss and Dutt. The split between Impact and Abyss and Dutt was said to be amicable, with Impact officials not wanting to prevent the duo from the opportunity with WWE.
[lawrence-related id=849920]Neither Abyss nor Sonjay Dutt have ever worked for WWE, making their signings very significant, as they have been notable Impact Wresting loyalists for years, with Dutt leaving the company temporarily during Jeff Jarrett’s return and the importing of Global Force Wrestling. After Jarrett left Impact, Dutt returned and has been an important figure in the company.
Most recently, Abyss became the latest member of the Impact Wrestling roster to be inducted into the TNA/Impact Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place in 2018 in New York City over Bound For Glory weekend, and Abyss was honored for being an important figure in TNA and Impact Wrestling’s history. Abyss joined Kurt Angle, Sting, Jeff Jarrett and Gail Kim as Impact Wrestling Hall of Fame members.
The report of Abyss and Sonjay Dutt comes on the heels of former Impact Wrestling X-Division Champion Trevor Lee recently announcing he had signed with WWE and will be reporting to the NXT brand.
