The 2019/2020 NFL season is now well underway. As the 32 teams are now heading into Week 5, there are already predictions being made about who will reach this year’s Super Bowl and hold the trophy. Things can change fast, and the fate of the season is yet to be decided.
Here’s how one of the most exciting leagues in the world is faring this year so far.
The top teams from week four (400)
The New England Patriots
Last year’s Super Bowl champions are starting the season off strong with 4 wins and no losses so far. The team still has one of the most powerful defenses in the NFL — a legacy that was reestablished after their most recent game against the Buffalo Bills at the New Era Stadium in New York. With their defense coming in strong with an end zone interception on fourth down, the Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills 16-10.
The game also saw wide receiver Matthew Slater make his first touchdown of his 12-year career after recovering a punt blocked by J.C. Jackson.
Kansas City Chiefs
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes transformed another game during Week 4 with the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat over the Detroit Lions 34-30. His latest highlight-reel play was staring down an on-field referee during a long-run in the first half against the Lions. Pundits believe he was looking for the potential of a penalty flag; but what the move really goes to show is his elite field awareness.
“When all is said and done he’s going to be the best to ever play the position,” said Chiefs linebacker Anthony Hitchens. “As a quarterback in his second year of playing, he just did something that some quarterbacks who have been playing for years can’t do.”
The Chiefs have won four games so far and were listed just second to the New England Patriots in the NFL’s power rankings.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys had a great start to the season, winning their first three games against the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins. A tough game against the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes Benz Superdome saw them lose 12-10.
The star performance for the Giants has to come from placekicker Wil Lutz, who scored them three field goals. A strong defense from the Giants limited the Cowboys to one touchdown by Ezekiel Elliot during the third quarter.
But the loss means the Cowboys now have something to prove. There’s still time for them to make a major comeback and work their way back to the top.
Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams also lost their winning streak during Week 4, with a 40-55 final score and dropping them down the rankings to 3-1. They’re still figuring things out this season but have another shot with a division opener on the road against the Seahawks.
They’ve still got some time to turn things around. First, they’ll need to get their defense back on track and get their offensive kicking off faster at the start of games. They’re not utilising their star offensive player Todd Gurley as well as they could. It’s time for them to get serious and make a change.
2019’s new signings
The 2019 NFL offseason also produced some good moves that could help teams move up the table during this season, with the choices really shifting the rankings on NFL odds and the potential Super Bowl champions.
The Cleveland Browns garnered a deal that brought in one of the best wide receivers of the NFL, Odell Beckham Jr. The Miami Dolphins acquired second-year quarterback (and potential franchise quarterback) Josh Rosen from the Arizona Cardinals. And the New England Patriots picked up veteran defensive end Michael Bennett from the Philadelphia Eagles, further bolstering their defensive end.
But who will win the Super Bowl?
There’s still a way to go before Super Bowl LIV takes place in February. But with Week 5 ahead, and many teams already fighting for their top rankings, there’s a good chance the New England Patriots may make it to the end again. Time will tell, as the fate of this year’s season is far from being sealed.
