The deadline to get a contract extension done is closing in for Nationals
It appears that the Washington Nationals and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman are closing in on an agreement on an extension. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post is reporting (via Twitter) that the last major hurdle to get by is some language on a no-trade clause. Zimmerman’s agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, has left Viera, Florida without a deal being done.
The deadline to get a deal done is Saturday morning, which Zimmerman has set as a deadline to work out a deal. If an extension is not signed by the time spring training opens to the full team, Zimmerman will enforce his decision to table the discussions until the end of the season.
Zimmerman will earn $12 million in 2012 and is under contract for 2013 at a price tag of $14 million. So there is still plenty of time for Washington to work out a deal to keep their franchise third baseman in the nation’s capital for the remainder of his career, or at least a few more years. Washington has shown a commitment to spending money recently, and you would think that they will find a way to keep Zimmerman beyond 2013.
So if you were hoping the Phillies would find a way to acquire Zimmerman in 2014 (Placido Polanco has a mutual option for 2013 at the end of the 2012 season), you may want to keep a close eye on this particular contract negotiation. Just in case.
