A fun little Twitter hash tag broke out on Twitter this afternoon, poking fun at the New York Mets. The concept was simple, four-word slogans for the New York Mets in 2012. The results, as you can imagine, were somewhat relentless and held nothing back on the financial state of the Mets organization and the overall empty feeling felt by Mets fans in recent seasons. It has been a rough couple of years for the NL East’s northern most member.
Here are some of our favorites from folks we either follow on Twitter or happened to see in a quick search. Feel free to add your own in the comments section below.
Not Enough Wild Cards – @Pessimets
On the day Major League Baseball formally announced there would be an extra wild card team in each league this postseason, this joke just seemed perfectly timed. This October ten teams will play in the postseason, with two wild cards squaring off in a one-game playoff, or in an play-in game, to advance to the NLDS and ALDS.
If you missed it, in the other wild card match-up the lower seed will receive two home games to start the series, giving the higher seed three home games at the end of the first round. Odd? You bet, but things return to normal next year with the more appropriate 2-2-1.
9 Innings of Laughs – @allthingsandy
Bringing new depth to the traditional LOLMets.
We need Jeremy Lin – @VicGarced
Let’s face it, David Wright is nice but he is no Jeremy Lin. With Jose Reyes taking his talents to Miami, why wouldn’t the Mets need Jeremy Lin?
Is Johan healthy yet? – @MatthewBrown914
It’s the annual question. We know he has been throwing this spring and he says he is feeling good and ready to get back on the mound. But how long will he stay there?
More of our favorites after the jump.
Pelfry is our ace – @mikechernow
This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the previous slogan suggestion. We just want to see more tension between Pelfry and Chase Utley please.
Good seats still available – @KevinCooney
Phillies beat reporter Kevin Cooney had to chime in on this fun, and he did not disappoint with one of the more obvious ones. We’ll give him credit for being the first we caught making an attendance joke for baseball’s 14th best attendance from 2011, which may be pretty well inflated.
Can’t Lose ‘Em All – @BluEyezJess
Or can you?
Still paying Bobby Bo – @ColonelNP
Still can’t get over the fact that the Mets are paying Bobby Bonilla $1.2 million annually until 2035. A paycheck for $1.2 million for doing absolutely nothing? Can somebody get me Bonilla’s agent’s phone number? Just as a reminder, Bonilla played his final major league game in 2001, and his final game in a Mets uniform was played in 1995.
First pitch…. season’s over – @JWerthsBeard
Our old friend, Jayson Werth’s Beard, had a suggestion, and given the history of Johan Santana it may not be too far-fetched.
Want us too, Brooklyn? – @TheBeils
Brooklyn will be welcoming the New Jersey Nets of the NBA in the near future. Is there room for the Mets?
We’re Garbage And We Know It – @Houston_Rocket
Well, not everybody can follow directions…
