Jamie Moyer leaving Phillies TV booth, now what?

After just one season in he booth alongside Tom McCarthy, former Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer is retiring from his role as a Phillies broadcaster.

Comcast Sportsnet issued a statement on Friday to announce Moyer’s decision.

“At the end of the Phillies’ season, I gave the situation a great deal of thought, with my family in mind,” Moyer said. “I enjoyed my year behind the mic tremendously, and the opportunity to work with Tom, Matt [Stairs], Mike [Schmidt] and Gregg [Murphy] is one I will cherish.

“However, as we are now based on the West Coast, the geography presents unique challenges to the matter at hand. I thus reached a decision that, for the moment, it’s very difficult to balance a bicoastal professional life with family life at home.”

Moyer was rough at times and seemed uncomfortable at times, but he was at his best when a part of a three-man booth with either Stairs or Schmidt when they got to talk baseball mechanics and approach. It was interesting to hear the views from a pitcher being compared to the opinions of a hitter, but Moyer was not always for everybody. Between he and Stairs, Moyer was the one that seemed to struggle a little more at carrying the conversation on the TV airwaves.

So what will the Phillies broadcast team plans look like now? Last year Stairs and Moyer split up the duties over the course of the season. Is Stairs now going to take on the full 162-game schedule? Or could another former Phillie fill the void and give Stairs a rest. Ricky Bottalico, perhaps?

Forget about the idea of moving the radio team into the TV booth. That is not going to happen. One guy I would like to see added to the booth would be Doug Glanville, although his position at ESPN is a pretty sweet gig. Moving to the broadcast booth might be a step back for Glanville.

One thing is for sure. Chris Wheeler is not coming back.

What do you want to happen in the broadcast booth in 2015?
