Out of the Batter’s Box – Pat Burrell down a slip-n-slide happened

Football was fun, but going down a slip-n-slide with a drink in hand is more fun.

1. Worst championship coaching decision since Game 6 in 1993?

There have been a number of bad decisions made in championship settings over the years in all sports. Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll will have a whole offseason wondering what would have happened if he had just decided to hand the football to Marshawn Lynch from the one-yard line. Instead, New England is celebrating yet another title. Some of us Phillies fans may want to compare this to Jim Fregosi bringing Mitch Williams into Game 6 of the 1993 World Series, but we would then be comparing apples to oddly-shaped apples. Hindsight will always be 20/20 on stuff like this.

2. Happy for the title-starved Boston sports fan

It has been a whole 14.5 months since the last championship parade in Boston. Have to feel good for those long-suffering fans that have survived this drought.

3. Pat Burrell sliding down a slip-and-slide happened

…And Chase Utley captured it on Instagram. This is one way to celebrate the Super Bowl, that’s for sure. Notice how Burrell manages to not lose grip of his drink. What a pro.

4. Ever wonder who was behind the Phillies TV commercials?

Nah, me neither, but Todd Zolecki has the inside information we crave during the last days of the offseason.

5. To DH or not to DH

I have come to the realization the universal implementation of the designated hitter will one day become a thing in baseball. I may not like it, but I have always found it somewhat silly the National League and American League play by separate rules in an era that shoves interleague play down our throats. Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe has the latest column suggesting it is time to make the DH a universal rule in baseball. Leave it to a sports writer in an American League city to have this stance. Do you think we’ll see the DH in the National League anytime soon?

6. Anyway, about Hamels…

Cole Hamels remains the biggest trade piece the Phillies have to offer to teams around baseball, or at least the most attractive. While Hamels was not dealt to another team like Boston or the Dodgers or Cubs during the winter meetings, the San Diego Padres reportedly remain an interested party. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (via Twitter) the Padres have remained in contact with the Phillies about a potential trade involving Hamels. It is a reach at best it seems, but it will be something to keep a close eye on if the Padres live up to some of the offseason turnaround hype surrounding it this offseason.

7. Best Super Bowl ad: Fiat

This was a down year for Super Bowl commercials, but I thought Fiat had a really good one that threw me a curveball halfway through it. It was good. Clever, threw the viewer a curveball and got a decent laugh.

I also enjoyed Nationwide’s ad with Mindy Kaling and the pair of Esurance ads with Lindsay Lohan and Bryan Cranston. The Snickers commercial taking place in The Brady Bunch was decent too. It was not a great commercial line-up in depth this year, and I just want the Bud Bowl to return. Or Terry Tate. Or Terry Tate in the Bud Bowl.

8. Worst Super Bowl ad: Nationwide killing kids

Not to make light of the seriousness of children being smashed to death by HD TVs in the living room, but anytime you kill a kid you better be prepared to be on the receiving end of plenty of criticism. Check out Awful Advertisements for more on the Super Bowl ads, including some we may not have seen.

9. Pitchers and catchers report in 16 days

Phillies pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater on February 18. We are almost there.
