The class of 2012 for Wisconsin basketball only includes 2 players in Sam Dekker and walk-on Zak Showalter and both of them came up huge as they led their teams (Sheboygan Lutheran and Germantown) to state titles at the Kohl Center yesterday.
Zak’s Warhawks team took down a game Milwaukee King to cap of an undefeated season and Showalter was clutch, going 6-6 from the free throw line late in the game to seal the victory. However, it was the performance of another Baby Badger that everyone will remember.
Sam Dekker hasn’t played a single game in a Badger uniform, but he just became a Kohl Center legend as of yesterday. He poured in 40 points, a state title game record, but the final 3 were the biggest of his life so far.
With his Sheboygan Lutheran team down 64-66 to Racine Lutheran with 13 seconds to go in the Wisconsin Division 5 State Championship game Dekker took the ball from the inbounds, dribbled to the right elbow and with 5 seconds left drilled a fade away 3 pointer to win the Crusaders their 1st ever state championship.
It’s a moment any of us that have ever shot or dribbled a basketball have dreamt of and he did it! If you weren’t excited for him to come to Madison before, this video below will put you in the excited category. Congrats to Dekker, Sheboygan Lutheran, and all the other state champions that were crowned yesterday.
