8.17.12 Practice – courtesy Nate Woelfel/MadTownBadgers |
(Editors Note: These are the impressions of our Nate Woelfel who was in attendance at Friday mornings practice that was open to the media).
When media members got their first glimpse at an entire practice on Monday, the state of the quarterback battle received mixed reviews. Some claimed that there was no contest and others felt that it would still take some time to iron things out.
The top-three quarterbacks: Danny O’Brien, Curt Phillips, and Joel Stave are continuing to split reps fairly equally and all three turned in solid performances on Friday morning. However, only Phillips and O’Brien took situational reps with the first team at the end of practice.
Phillips was arguably the most accurate of the three on this day, but each member of the trio continued to show consistency.
Montee Ball was indeed suited up and donning the green “no-contact” uniform. He participated in all of the individual drills and as part of the skeleton drill, but was a bystander for the bulk of practice.
James White took a good portion of the carries in Ball’s absence, though Melvin Gordon, Vonte Jackson, and Jeff Lewis saw time with the first stringers as well. White was split out in some formations and also was placed as a kick returner.
Dropped balls continued to be an issue for the wide receivers today, though most of the miscues came during one-on-one drills during the early sessions. The skeleton drill as well as most of the 11-on-11 scenarios showed marked improvement.
Wide out Jordan Fredrick did not seem to be affected by the calf injury he suffered earlier in the week. After practice, Fredrick referred to the injury as simply, “a scare.”
The defense showed a high energy level as a whole and it carried through to many of the “in-game” scenarios. The line showed good penetration on several occasions.
Defensive lineman Bryce Gilbert came up lame in the first half of practice. He left the field in a protective boot.
Several NFL scouts were also in attendance, the Cowboys, Titans, Chargers, and Dolphins were all represented.
