Late Rally Lifts Men’s Soccer to Victory

Down 2-0 with under 15 minutes left in a soccer game is pretty much a done deal, but Wisconsin found 4 goals in the final 14 minutes to win 4-3 over the Memphis Tigers on Friday night inJoey Tennyson Memphis. In fact it took a final minute goal from a newcomer to steal victory from the jaws of a tie.

Wisconsin got single goals from Drew Conner (76′), Chris Prince (79′), Derek Pitts (84′), and Jide Oluyedun (89′) to get the win.

Needless to say the 1,100 fans in attendance down south were treated to one of the craziest games they may see all season long. The host Tigers went up 2-0 within the first 21 minutes of the game and held on to that lead for the next 58 minutes of game play.

But that’s when things got a little crazy. After Prince’s 79th minute goal tied it up the Badgers would take their first lead of the game in the 84th minute, going up 3-2.

The lead wouldn’t last long, in fact it was just a minute ten seconds to be exact, as the Tigers’ Mark Sherrod received a cross from the right side and fired home a shot from 15 yards out to tie the game back up.

Oluyedun, a sophomore transfer seeing his first action for Wisconsin, rescued the win for the Badgers on a shot fired from about 19 yards out of goal and was assisted on the play by junior Joey Tennyson.

Tennyson was unusually distributive out of the midfield, accounting for two assists in the game. That’s half of his career total of 4 assists. AJ Cochran also recorded an assist for the Badgers in the victory.

Both teams had their way in terms of offense with the teams combining for 25 shots (11 Wisconsin, 14 Memphis). 12 of those shots either found the net or had to be saved by the goalkeepers, so it’s safe to say it was a busy night on both sides between the pipes.

Wisconsin had Max Jentsch in net and he allowed all three Memphis goals while stopping 3 shots in picking up the win.

The Badgers will now head out west next weekend to take on Washington (8/31) and Portland (9/2) in Portland, OR.
