It’s hard to believe it but the Badgers’ hoop season tips off tomorrow at the Kohl Center against Southeastern Louisiana. With just 1 day left until Wisconsin Basketball, today we look at #1, Ben Brust.

Last season Brust shot 38.9% from behind the line. Brust averaged 1.6 three made on 4.1 attempts per game. Overall he made 58 threes on 149 attempts. Brust was certainly a streaky shooter, as some nights he lighted up defenses from outside the arc, while other nights he just couldn’t get rolling. Either way, Brust’s three point ability posses a huge threat for defenses.

Brust averaged 2.2 rebounds a game last year, a solid contribution from a guard. His largest rebounding total of the season against UMKC, grabbing 6 boards. This stat really shows Brust’s efforts beyond the offensive side of the ball.

In last years’ match-up against the Running Rebels of UNLV, Brust exploded off the bench to record 25 points off 8-9 shooting. This total was largely thanks to his three point stroke, as he went 7-7 from behind the arc, a school record. With the absence of Jordan Taylor and Josh Gasser this year, Brust will have to pick up the load offensively and carry the scoring from the guards.

Analysis
Brust had a breakout season, especially on the offensive side of the ball. At times he was plain incredible, but he could really use some work on his consistency. Brust was already set to take over the starting shooting guard role, but with Josh Gasser now out for the season, he’ll have to step up even more. At times Brust is going have to step out of his comfort zone by distributing and creating plays for others.
At the start of last season most Badger fans thought of Brust as a one dimensional player. But as the season rolled on he showed that’s not the case. Through his outstanding effort and glimpses of playmaking ability, Brust showed us he can be a complete basketball player. If he continues improving, Ben Brust could really have a breakout season.
