Earlier today the Badgers athletic department announced that Pete Waite, the Women's Volleyball head coach for the past 14 years, has resigned his position at the helm of the Volleyball program. Waite directed the Badgers Volleyball program to nine NCAA tournament appearances in his 14 years at Wisconsin.
“I’ve decided to resign from my position to allow someone else the opportunity to take this program back to the top of the Big Ten,” said Waite in a press release. “We have some very good players in the program right now and have signed three excellent recruits for 2013. I wish them all nothing but success and I look forward to following the rest of their careers.
Overall Waite was 305-146 (.676) in his time at Wisconsin and was 571-248 (.697) in 25 years as a head coach at the collegiate level.
“I would like to thank Pete for his years of service to the Wisconsin volleyball program,” said Athletic Director Barry Alvarez via statement. “He always ran his program with respect and dignity, and was a good representative of the athletic department. We wish him all the best.”
Waite got the Badgers to the runner up finish at the 2000 NCAA tournament and won Big Ten conference championships in 2000 and 2001. He was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, and 2006.
No replacement was immediately named and according to the release from the Badgers athletics department they will begin a national search for the new Volleyball head coach. Just a few weeks ago the Badgers signed the nations No. 1 recruit to a letter of intent and it will be interesting to see if this resignation has an effect on Lauren Carlini's commitment to the Badgers or not.
