If you're involved with the twitterverse or on Facebook it's safe to say there are more than a fair share of people standing on the ledge and telling everyone that the Sky is Falling. I mean the Badgers football team has lost their head coach, five assistant coaches, and one recruit from the 2013 class….. OH NO….. THE SKY IS FALLING…..
O.k., folks, step away from the metaphorical ledge for a second and INHALE…. now EXHALE…. and repeat after me: "Everything is going to be o.k., the sun will still shine tomorrow, life will go on."
Now also remember you could be burying your child like the parents of 20 kids in Connecticut are about to do and get a bit of perspective.
In our Badgers-centric world does it suck to see an exodus of coaches and ones that have helped to develop some great future recruiting classes to Wisconsin? You bet. However it's temporarily worrisome at best. It's never fun to have to sit and not know things, it's part of human nature to worry and I get that.
However, there's also this – control the things you can control and let go of the things you can't. In this case that means not overreacting to the news of coaches leaving and the program being in flux. You and I can't do anything about it and in the end we can't do anything about the timeframe that is the coaching search process.
Beyond that, I ask you this question… Is the sky really falling? I mean we went through something quite similar last season with the only difference being the fact that we had a head coach in place at this point in time – one that no one saw leaving anytime soon, but I digress.
My point is this – some of these same people that are freaking out now freaked out last year because Chryst was taking Bostad, Rudolph and a host of other "really good recruiters" with him and our 2012 class was going to suck and suffer for it. Instead, when all was said and done, the Badgers class was just fine and the new staff came in and picked up right where things left off. You could argue they even expanded what Wisconsin has been capable of in terms of recruiting.
Let me propose to you this: Perhaps, maybe, just maybe this new head coach and new staff will be able to recruit just as well and hold on to the 2013 class too? I mean, who knows, this coach may even be able to bring along some players they are currently talking to at whatever school they are currently coaching at.
Also, let's be honest… it's not like UW was losing Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and the nation's best coaching staff all in one fell swoop either. Sure, Bielema did some great things at Wisconsin, but a national championship winning head coach he was not. Could the next coach do that at Wisconsin? It's possible. It's also possible they suck, but playing the freak out card with an equation that's only half played out at best is a bit premature if you ask me.
Just because you and I don't know who the head coach is doesn't mean the sky is falling and everything is going to go to hell. I don't know about you, but so far Barry Alvarez has gotten his hires of head coaches right and there's no reason to doubt he'll do what it takes to make sure he does the same in this case. After all, football is his baby at UW anyway.
I know it's hard not to freak out or fret over what's happening and what isn't, but perhaps at this point it's best to take a step back, take a deep breath and realize that change isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it can even be a blessing and I'd rather take a wait and see approach than worry about something we, as fans, have no control over whatsoever.
