Well, here's something we don't see everyday around the Badgers athletic program – a Women's basketball player earning weekly Big Ten honors. That's exactly what happened today as Badgers sophomore forward Jacki Gulczynski was named the Big Ten Women's basketball Player of the Week. She became the first Badger to earn that honor since 2008.
Gulczynski got the award on the strength of back-to-back double doubles in wins over Florida Atlantic and Eastern Illinois. Against the Owls of FAU she recorded her 1st career double double by picking up 16 points and 11 rebounds. She followed that up with a career best 24 points and added 13 rebounds against the Panthers of EIU.
In the Eastern Illinois game Gulczynski started the game a perfect 8-8 and scored the Badgers' first 11 points in the 76-47 victory. For the week she shot 55.6% from the field.
This wasn't the first award for a Badgers player this season though as freshman guard Nicole Bauman picked up co-Freshman of the week honors on Dec. 10.
Up next for Gulczynski and the Badgers is a major test against in-state foe Green Bay in Green Bay on Sunday at 7pm.
