Bo Ryan named Big Ten Coach of the Year

The Big Ten announced their 2013 postseason awards this evening, and a number of those representing the University of Wisconsin basketball program were honored.

After having to deal with a devastating season-ending injury for starting Point Guard Josh Gasser,  an awful non-conference start, and a number of questions surrounding the Badgers, Bo Ryan weathered the storm and coached his team to a 12-6 finish in Big Ten play, taking fourth in the conference. In a season that seemed destined to be a disaster for the Badgers, Ryan did a phenomenal job keeping the program towards the top of the conference yet again, as Wisconsin finished in the top four of the B1G for the 13th straight year.

Big Ten coaches and media members recognized Bo Ryan's accomplishments this year by naming him the 2012-13 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Ryan has now won the award 3 times in his 12 year tenure at Wisconsin- winning in the 2001–02 and 2002-03 seasons after back-to-back Big Ten titles in his first two years as coach of the Badgers.

Senior Forward Jared Berggren was named second team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. Berggren also was named to the All-Defensive team by the Big Ten coaches, as well as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree. Wisconsin has now had one of it's players on the All-Defensive team for the fourth straight season.

Freshman sensation Sam Dekker was named to the coaches' All-Freshman Team as well as an honorable mention for the media's All-Big Ten team. Most believed that Dekker was a shoe-in for Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, however that honor was won by Indiana's Will Sheehey.

Sheehey and Dekker's season numbers are practically identical (with Dekker's being a tad bit better), so factors like Sheehey's age (Junior) and being on the conference champion had to push him over the edge. Dekker was certainly worthy, but you can't say Sheehy wasn't.

Junior sharpshooter Ben Brust was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten by both the media and the coaches.

The rest of the awards can be seen here.

Wisconsin's post-season starts Friday afternoon as they'll face the winner of #5 seeded Michigan and #12 Penn State in the second round of the Big Ten tournament.
