Alvarez making headlines at Big Ten meetings

Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez has a history of telling people the truth and not what they think they want to hear and clearly he’s one of the most respected AD’s in the Big Ten. He’s got the name recognition and frankly when he speaks people listen.

That continues today as the Big Ten meetings get underway in Chicago.

Alvarez has shed some light on a few topics that are of interest to Badger fans and could have a major impact on the landscape of FBS football as a whole.

First, he spoke in regards to the proposed and already thought to have been locked in stone Big Ten ban on playing football games against FCS opponents.

Then Alvarez also spoke to something that has been talked about in the background for awhile – moving the Big Ten championship game around and possibly playing games at some destination stadiums in the future.

So, kiss games at Soldier Field in Chicago or Lambeau Field in Green Bay goodbye, it ain’t happening.

On the one hand Alvarez has some valid points about the championship game and to be honest Indianapolis does things up right from everything we’ve been told and experienced here at MTB. Playing games in early December outdoors in the Midwest is a terrible idea.

The Big Ten doesn’t want their marquee game decided by sloppy and potentially really bad conditions and while fans can adjust and do show up for quite a few cold-weather events. After all, we can be a hearty group of people. That said, putting that game out to the world in those potential conditions isn’t ideal.

So, why break something that isn’t in need of fixing at the moment (although the attendance figures are a whole different issue).

As for the first bit of news by Alvarez… Well, I’ll let you read what I had to say about that over at TheB1GTime. Let’s just say this for now – I find this completely laughable.
