Remember last week when I said it wasn't time to start worrying much with the transfer of Reggie Mitchell out of the program? Well, you can feel free to worry a TON now as there are multiple reports indicating that incoming JUCO transfer Donnell Vercher will not be incoming after all.
It appears that there are issues with his transcripts (not grade related folks) at the Wisconsin admissions office and Vercher will instead by plying his football skills for the Fresno State Bulldogs instead of the Badgers.
Um, ya…. Now it's safe to say UW's got issues at this position. Option No. 1 left town last week to head home to Pittsburgh, option No. 2 is now gone do to some technicality on the admissions side of things (rumor has it UW didn't like some of his core courses and thus he didn't have the credits to transfer).
Option No. 3 is a safety who's started three games, but was so uninspiring he didn't see much time this spring and wasn't considered a true option to begin with – one Michael Trotter. Option No. 4 is likely Michael Caputo – who also started one game last season at safety and he has made at least spot appearances the rest of the season. Right now if I had to pick the starter on Aug. 31st I'm going with Caputo – but we shall see.
With Vercher out of the pitcher depth is a MASSIVE concern now as besides Trotter and Caputo the Badgers will be relying on three former running backs to make a fast transition to the safety spot. Those three are the newly transformed Jeff Lewis, Kyle Zuleger, and Isaiah Williams.
Other options that no one really thought would be options are now suddenly a lot more attractive and we're talking about, Joe Schobert, and redshirt freshman Nate Hammon. All of them have the height and weight to play safety in this scheme, but speed and athletic ability is also needed.
To say this group is in some serious need of players to step up and play out of their minds in camp is an understatement now. It's officially time to hit the panic button at safety in 2013.
