Joe Thomas to Badger football 2013

Here's a story of a number… a number that one could argue is the greatest of all-time at Wisconsin – yet it sits barren before we head into 2013. We're talking about the No. 72 at the University of Wisconsin. Sure, everyone knows No. 33 and who it represents and some of the other retired numbers, but throughout the course of Wisconsin football history there may not be a single number with more significant and great players spread throughout history than number 72.

So, naturally it was hard to pick a winner, but today we declare it Joe Thomas to Badger football 2013. Thomas should need no introduction to most in Badger nation, but let us refresh your memory of perhaps the most decorated OL to ever play in the Cardinal and White.

Thomas won the 2006 Outland Trophy as the nation's most outstanding lineman and was a two time All-American selection (2006 consensus AA). He also was a three time academic All-Big Ten pick.

O.k., one player doesn't make a number great… Well then try Jeff Dellenbach from the 1980's, or Al Johnson from the late 90's to early 2000's, or the just recently departed Travis Frederick on for size. Point being this number has produced a ton of talent. All four of the names we've mentioned have been NFL draft picks, two of them in the 1st round.

Hard to argue with those kind of results, huh?
