Bo Ryan's father, Butch, has passed away at the age of 89 early on Friday morning according to a report by Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Ryan, who lost his mother last year, was informed of his father's deteriorating condition at a golf outing on Wednesday according to the report.
William, Butch's real name, was a visible and sometimes vociferous presence in Bo's life and the stories and thoughts about Butch have been pouring in since the announcement of his passing. We'd like to share a few as we extend our thoughts and prayers to Bo and his entire family.
May Butch rest in peace.
Butch Ryan was a retired pipe fitter, a decorated World War II hero and one of the funniest storytellers you could ever meet.

@BadgerMBB Loud fake sneeze that shook the empty Kohl Center whenever #Badgers were practicing FTs. Always startled Otto. #NeverGotOld

Memories of Butch Ryan will always make me smile. Could always tell a good story–an entertaining and smart man. Taught his son well.

1 of my favorite Butch Ryan memories was during Bo's 1st yr as UW coach. Badgers beat Illinois 72-66. Butch ran on court with team (cont)

Condolences to Bo Ryan on the passing of his dad, Butch. When you talked with Butch, you know where Bo got his sense of humor/toughness from

A clear definition of a father and son best friendship was Butch and Bo Ryan. The love, respect and true admiration those 2 had was special.
