Early Basketball Preview: St. John’s

"L stands for opening season loss"

Basketball season is right around the corner, and with another football bye week, we at Madtown Badgers thought it would be a good time to start with some early previews. This is some hard-hitting journalism, so be sure to follow along!

School: St. John’s Red Storm

Location: Queens, New York

Conference: Big East Conference

Undergrad Enrollment: 15,720

2012-13 record: 16-15

Top returning players: The Red Storm returns it’s two top scorers from last year in junior guard D’Angelo Harrison and sophomore forward JaKarr Sampson. Harrison averaged 17.8 points per game while Sampson averaged 14.9 points game. They are preseason first and second team all-Big East respectively. St. John’s also returns sophomore center Chris Obekpa who is honorable mention all-Big East. One last name to remember: Rysheed Jordan. The 6’4 freshman guard was predicted as preseason rookie of the year in the Big East.

Who’d win in a mascot fight?: Draw. A red storm is a fierce storm, but I’d expect the badger to burrow and hide underground. Not a great showing for our beloved badger, but I mean, it’s a freaking red storm…VIDEO: A badger prepares for the red storm.

One interesting major: Funeral Service Administration

One fact to help you win your local trivia night: St. John’s has campuses in both Rome, Italy and Paris, France.

Coolest name: God’sgift Achiuwa.

Prediction: The opening game of the 2013-14 season is a neutral site game played at the newly created Pentagon in scenic Sioux Falls, SD. The arena, well, it’s awesome. It’s a new facility that was created to look retro, and I think they pulled it off quite nicely. As for the game, I see Wisconsin winning this one by around six to eight points. It’s a nice test to start the season against a decent power conference team with some potential. Hopefully St. John’s puts together a nice season and this will be considered a “Good Win” when tournament resumes come along.
