The Minnesota men’s hockey team proved to be too much for Wisconsin to handle as the Gophers downed the Badgers 4-1 Friday night at Mariucci Arena.
Joseph LaBate gave Wisconsin the early edge when he stuffed one home at the 6:31 mark of the opening stanza. But the Badgers’ joy was short-lived as the Gophers went on to score four unanswered goals en route to a decisive victory.
Mike Reilly knotted the game at one apiece mere minutes after LaBate’s score.
Seth Ambroz lit the lamp for the host squad with just under seven minutes remaining in the first to give Minnesota a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
The two clubs were held scoreless in the second period. However, Connor Reilly pushed the Gophers’ edge to two with a score midway through the third.
Ambroz tickled the twine of an empty net in the waning moments of the contest to put the icing on the cake for the nation’s top-ranked team.
The Gophers outshot UW 45-25 in front of a near sellout crowd of 9,948.
Landon Peterson notched a season-high 41 saves in a losing effort. His record falls to 2-4-1.
With the loss, Wisconsin drops to 4-4-1 on the year.
