Wisconsin's 2014 recruiting class had been shaping up as the highest ranked in school history, but one piece of the puzzle has been missing — Cornerback help. No need to worry about that anymore, as the Badgers landed a pair of commitments from corners in the past 24 hours, according to our recruiting partners at Badger247.
On Thursday night, the Badgers did it again, flipping another committed recruit. This time they landed the first corner of the 2014 class in 3-star Derrick Tindal of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Boyd). He was committed to fellow Big Ten school, Indiana, before making the flip on Thursday night.
Standing at 5'11", 160lbs., Tindal was the No. 111-ranked corner in the country by the 247sports composite. Tindal could also be a major force in the return game, as you can see by what he does on his film.
Tindal wasn't the only corner to commit to the Badgers though.
According to Badger247, Wisconsin also got the commitment of 3-star athlete Cornelius Sturghill, who will start out at cornerback. The No. 60-ranked athlete visited Wisconsin last weekend and was able to commit to UW on Friday. He had offers from UCLA, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Purdue among others.
The Memphis, Tenn. (Melrose) athlete has wanted to commit for awhile and according to Badger247, the Badgers accepted his commitment on Friday.
Sturghill is 5'11", 170lbs. and is commitment No. 26 for the Badgers.
Here is film on Sturghill:
One thing you will notice about both of these commits is that they are athletes first, something Gary Andersen and his staff have put at a premium for skill position players. Rather than looking at technique and specific positions, the Badgers are out there recruiting the athletes they think they can mold into specific positions.
It's a departure from the previous two staffs in many ways, but a welcome change at spots like corner and wide receiver, where Wisconsin has struggled to find pure athletes for awhile.
The Badgers still have room for a few more players, and names like cornerback Chris Lammons and offensive lineman Kaleb McGary (both 4-star recruits), are top targets as we head to national signing day on Feb. 5.
