The Wisconsin men’s hockey team ended its 12-game homestand on a sour note with a 3-1 loss to Ohio State Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
Mark Zengerle put the Badgers on the board midway through the second period with his third goal of the season, giving UW a 1-0 edge.
Just under two minutes later, Nick Schilkey lit the lamp for the Buckeyes, tying the contest at one apiece.
Nick Oddo lit the lamp at 15:06 of the second to give Ohio State the lead heading into the final intermission.
Wisconsin rattled off nine shots in the third period, but none of them proved to be the equalizer.
A late, empty-net goal put the icing on the cake for OSU.
The Badgers outshot Ohio State 37-22 on the night and held the advantage in that category in all three periods.
Goaltender Christian Frey put together a solid performance for the Buckeyes, turning away 36 of the 37 shots he faced.
“We played better tonight than we did last night. We told our guys they did a good job in many areas,” UW head coach Mike Eaves said. “We just ran into a hot goaltender and that happens in this sport. They need to walk out of this building with their heads up and knowing how well they played. It’s just part of athletics.”
The loss was just the second of the home stand of the Badgers and it came in front of a crowd of 15,021, the largest of the season.
“It was fun. That’s what you want as a hockey player and that’s part of the luxury of playing at Wisconsin. You get that sort of thing,” Zengerle said. “I think everyone in that locker room is bummed that we didn’t get the win for that crowd. And that’s something we talked about. Hopefully we have another opportunity when we play Minnesota in a few weeks to do that.”
