While Jake McCabe and Michael Mersch both left Wisconsin after the NCAA loss to North Dakota, both are leaving on a high note in their collegiate careers as well. On Friday, the American Hockey Coaches Association named both as All-Americans.
McCabe was tabbed a first team All-American, while Mersch leaves Wisconsin as a member of the second team. With those honors, the duo becomes Wisconsin’s 38th and 39th All-American’s. Mersch earned one of the rare honors in Wisconsin hockey history, being just the 13th forward in school history to be named an All-American. McCabe was the 18th such selection for UW defensemen.
Both finished this season with first-team All-Big Ten honors as well.
Mersch led the Big Ten with 22 goals this season, 12 of which came in conference play. He tallied 35 points in 37 games played in his final season at Wisconsin. On the other hand, McCabe tallied eight goals and 25 points from the rearguard of the UW defense.
UW hasn’t had a pair of All-Americans since the 2011 season when defensemen Justin Schultz and Jake Gardiner both earned honors.
