Today is a glorious day for Badger football fans, and not just because we’re celebrating Jake Stengel (82 days) to the start of the 2014 Badger football season. It’s a glorious day because Badger football players report for the start of summer workouts.
Wisconsin’s roster appears to be near 100 percent as they head towards fall camp, and that means a lot of the Badgers work will get done in the time where coaches and media have very little (read no) contact with the players.
One of the more interesting players to watch this summer and fall is Stengel, so let’s take a look at his time at UW to date and where things are heading.
Stengel’s Story So Far:
– He’s been a special teams player for the most part during his first two years in the program. However, he has only recorded stats in his redshirt freshman season (2012).
– Made appearances in five games in 2012, including the Big Ten championship game against Nebraska. Recorded a tackle at Nebraska and recovered a fumble in his first ever game (against UTEP).
– Did not appear in 2013.
What to Expect in 2014:
The Sheboygan, Wis. (North) native has a great opportunity in front of him with a wide open depth chart at wide receiver. At 6’3″ and nearly 200 pounds, Stengel could be a good weapon for the Badgers, but a lack of consistency has hurt him over the first part of his career. Depending on what happens with the five freshmen coming on board this fall, Stengel could remain buried on the depth chart or could see himself in the rotation. Given the fact that few players have stayed healthy enough to make it through a camp or spring, Stengel has gotten some good reps in. It’s on him to turn that experience in to production this fall or he could remain sidelined.
