Wisconsin fans were put on alert early Thursday morning for an impending commitment, and by late morning the Badgers had the verbal pledge we were all waiting for. Nick Thomas, another of Andersen’s under the radar offers, pulled the trigger with a verbal commitment to the Badgers.
Thomas is a product of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fl. (by way of Kansas) and is an inside linebacker prospect at the collegiate level. His commitment makes it nine in the 2015 class for Wisconsin. Thomas was previously unrated, but upon his commitment, 247Sports rated him an 85 and a 3-star prospect.
“I love Wisconsin,” Thomas said in a previous interview, via Badger247. “The Big Ten is a great fit for me. I think I could have a big impact at Wisconsin.”
With Thomas’ rating today, the Badgers moved up to No. 32 in the country and No. 5 in the Big Ten, just switching places with Iowa.
Thomas is a 6’3″, 225-pound linebacker whose offer sheet was beginning to rise. He chose the Badgers over Hawaii, while also receiving interest from the likes of Oklahoma, Miami (FL), Kansas, Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest, Marshall, and Baylor.
Dave Aranda, Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator, was the primary recruiter for Thomas. The rising middle linebacker only picked up his offer from Wisconsin on May 19th and apparently didn’t waist any time jumping on it.
What I like the most is Thomas’ ability to stick in on blocks and shed those blocks up the middle. He plays with great pad level and also appears to have some very good instincts with the ball. What is unknown and may be the weakest part of his game is his pass coverage, which is something to watch over his senior season and when he puts on a Badger uniform.
This marks the Badgers first commitment from the state of Florida in this recruiting cycle, but it’s unlikely to be the last that’s for sure.
