The good times keep rolling on for the Badgers in the 2015 recruiting class following its camp this past weekend. After securing four commitments during the weekend, the Badgers added one more to the fold from the camp in 4-star tight end David Edwards out of Downers Grove, Ill.
Edwards is listed as an athlete according to 247Sports and is the No. 28-ranked athlete in the country and No. 5-ranked player out of the state of Illinois. However, Edwards is being recruited strictly as a tight end by Wisconsin.
UW got his commitment over other finalists Illinois and Iowa.
He is the second 4-star tight end to commit in the 2015 class, joining Californian Kyle Penniston as verbal commits to the Badgers. With Edwards’ commitment, Wisconsin is now up to 14 commits and spots are quickly becoming a premium in this class.
It could’ve been that equation, and the combination of what was a home run weekend visit that made Edwards pull the trigger. At 6’6 and 225 pounds, Edwards has plenty of time to grow further in to his body, but one thing that isn’t missing is straight up athletic ability.
After all, Edwards played quarterback and tight end on his high school team this past season. His tape shows a player with good speed, awareness and the raw tools to become a great pass-catching tight end. He’ll need help with his blocking skills, but that will come with time and a bit more bulk on his body.
Personally, I love this kid and the upside his tape shows is tremendous.
With the commitment, the Badgers are now the No. 14-ranked class in the country according to 247Sports and stay steady at the No. 2 spot in the Big Ten. It is interesting to see them hang on to the No. 2 spot after Ohio State just added two 4-star kids of their own in the past few days. Look for UW to not stay in those lofty spots all 2015 recruiting cycle, but with the haul they’ve got verbally committed the Badgers may not fall as much as some think too.
