The Badgers women’s soccer team came in to Friday afternoon’s game against Michigan State ranked No. 9 in the country and unbeaten, but it was facing life without star Cara Walls as Big Ten play opened.

UW left East Lansing for Ann Arbor still unbeaten thanks to one unlikely hero — freshman Becca Harrison. It’s a name you’ve likely never heard before, but she found an opportune time to open up her collegiate account as she netted a game-winning brace for the Badgers in their Big Ten opener.

Harrison scored the first goal of her career at the 19:42 mark of the 1st half, but she wasn’t done celebrating on the day.

Wisconsin held the offensive advantage over the home Spartans in the first half, outshooting MSU 9-6.

But, as the half wore down it was clear momentum was swinging back to the home team, and Michigan State eventually put one home in the 58th minute to tie it up at 1-1. The Badgers nearly put a few opportunities past Spartans’ goalkeeper Courtney Clem, as they put five shots on the board in the second half.

It wasn’t enough though, and the two teams were headed to overtime. The golden goal period didn’t last long though, as the Badgers’ lone goal-scorer in regulation came up with a memorable goal for her first brace as a Badger.

Harrison sat on the left side of the box on a corner kick, and after a weak clearance attempt by Michigan State she slammed home the game winner from the left-top of the box. Oh, and it all happened just one minute in to the overtime period.

The win moves the Badgers to 7-0 on the season.
