The Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team hasn’t seen the No. 1 ranking in the country since the 2011-12 season, but a weekend sweep of WCHA rival Ohio State did the trick and UW earned the No. 1 spot in the USCHO.com Division I Women’s Hockey Poll.
Making things even sweeter, Wisconsin (6-0-0, 4-0-0-0 WCHA) took the No. 1 spot away from Border Battle rival Minnesota (3-0-1, 1-0-1-0 WCHA), garnering 13 of the 15 first place votes in the process.
Wisconsin is ranked No. 1 in the country for the firs time since March 5, 2012. UW’s No. 1 ranking is also the first non-Gopher team ranked at the top of an in-season poll since that last No. 1 ranking by the Badgers in 2012.
This past weekend the Badgers won 6-0 on Friday night and 3-0 on Sunday, adding to one of the best offensive outputs in the country early on this season. Wisconsin has outscored its first three opponents this season by a combined 30-4.
UW was able to take advantage of Minnesota tying Minnesota-Duluth 3-3 in the second game of their two-game series this past weekend.
However, all this does is add fuel to the Border Battle rivalry, one that will see the next chapter written this weekend.
Wisconsin and Minnesota will get together in Madison at LaBahn Ice Arena for their first series of the season. UW and the Gophers meet on Friday at 7 p.m. at LaBahn Arena before wrapping up their series at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
