Gopher Hate Week: Decade of domination in review (2010 edition)

(All this week we’re taking a look back at the last 10 years of wins in this rivalry, reminding everyone of the decade of domination by the Badgers)

What better than a six-pack of wins? How about keeping the streak alive with a seventh win. Oh, and doing it on homecoming too. That’s what was at stake for the Badgers and Gophs in the 2010 competition.

Needless to say, the safety school out in Eastern Dakota provided little to no resistance.

Final Score: Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 23

Minnesota did its best to keep the ball away from John Clay, James White and the rest of the Wisconsin offense.

With four straight touchdowns to open the second half, however, the Badgers made sure they kept Paul Bunyan’s Axe away from their Border Battle rival for a seventh-consecutive season.

Clay found the end zone three times and White added two more rushing scores as the 20th-ranked Badgers (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) plowed and passed their way to a 41-23 Homecoming win over the Golden Gophers (1-5, 0-2) in front of 80,328 fans at Camp Randall Stadium.

The duo of Clay and White combined for 229 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the day, including four in the second half, as the Badgers ran away with the win. White finished with 118 yards and two scores, while Clay had 111 yards and three touchdowns — the second time in three games that both have surpassed the 100-yard mark.

Quarterback Scott Tolzien was equally effective through the air, completing 17 of 23 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown. Freshman wide receiver Jared Abbrederis was on the receiving end of that passing score, while senior tight end Lance Kendricks hauled in five catches for a team-high 75 yards.

Junior receiver Nick Toon had six grabs for 52 yards, as well.

It was a strong day all around for the balanced Badgers offense, which rolled up 250 yards on the ground and had 223 through the air. UW scored touchdowns on all six of its red-zone trips, finishing with 30 first downs and converting 7 of 9 attempts on third down.
