(All this week we’re taking a look back at the last 10 years of wins in this rivalry, reminding everyone of the decade of domination by the Badgers)
After Jerry Kill got a bitter taste in his first Axe game, would things change as he attempted to turn around the Gophs program?
The answer was an emphatic no in 2012, as the Badgers easily took care of the Gophs for the ninth straight win in the series.
Final Score: Wisconsin 38, Gophs 13
This game was all about James White, as the junior would go for 175 yards on just 15 carries to lead Wisconsin to victory. With the win the Badgers got to bowl eligibility that year, improving to 3-1 in Big Ten play as well.
It was all White in the first half for the Badgers, with him opening up the scoring on a 14-yard run for a 7-0 lead. After the Gophs battled back to a 7-7 tie on the next possession, White put UW up 14-7 with a 34-yard run with just 1:49 left in the second quarter.
The lead and the game was ugly at the half, but the Badgers had just apparently woken up from their slumber. Kyle French hit a 33-yard field goal and White galloped for a 48-yard touchdown run as UW racked up 17 unanswered points for a 24-7 lead late in the third quarter.
It was all the Badgers would need, as the Gophs mustered up just 96 yards rushing and 149 yards through the air. UW would outgain the Gophs 443 to 245 while running 15 more plays on the day.
With White leading the way on the ground, Wisconsin would run for 337 yards, as Montee Ball would run for 171 yards in his final Axe game. He would tack on two touchdowns to go with White’s three and Wisconsin kept the streak alive in easy fashion.
