Melvin Gordon is creeping up on one of the most recognized records in college football, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to see him earning postseason honors. On Monday, Gordon was named the Big Ten’s Running Back of the Year and led a group of 14 Badgers to earn All-Big Ten honors.
Gordon may have a bigger award or two coming, with the Big Ten waiting until tomorrow to name the Offensive and Defensive player of the year awards and the Heisman Trophy ceremony likely in his future too.
Still, he was the headliner and also earned 1st team All-Big Ten honors by the coaches and media (also from our brothers at talking10.com). Joining him on the first-team were offensive linemen Kyle Costigan and Rob Havenstein, as well as linebacker Derek Landisch.
Landisch was a pick of the coaches on the first-team, but he was only a second-team All-Big Ten pick by the media. Costigan, Gordon and Havenstein were 1st team picks by both the coaches and the media.
Speaking of the media, they managed to somehow keep from voting a single Wisconsin defender to the 1st team despite the group ranking in the top 8 of total, scoring, rushing and passing defense in the country.
The media attempted to make up for it by naming linebackers Vince Biegel and Derek Landisch as second-team picks. Safety Michael Caputo was named to the second team as well, but was the only one named to both the coaches and media teams.
Wisconsin also saw offensive lineman Dan Voltz be named 2nd team by the media, while the coaches put cornerback Darius Hillary on the second team.
There were six Badgers who earned Honorable mention selections:
TE Sam Arneson (media)
K Rafael Gaglianone (both)
LB Marcus Trotter (both)
OG Dallas Lewallen (both)
LB Joe Schobert (both)
OT Tyler Marz (media)
Our partners and friends at talking10.com were a little higher on a few Badgers, naming both Gaglianone and Lewallen as second team picks. However, they didn’t see Costigan as the better option of the UW guards, leaving him off their selection (although they didn’t name an honorable mention list).
