4 Badgers named to Athlon 1st team All-Big Ten list

Things are going to be very different in 2015 for the Wisconsin Badgers. Gone is headlining running back Melvin Gordon and so too is head coach Gary Andersen. With both those guys off to the West Coast now, the Badgers look to a future with new stars and a familiar name at head coach.

Given the change, it may be surprising to know that the Badgers are loved by a lot of pundits in national magazines. On Thursday, Athlon Sports released their 2015 preseason All-Big Ten teams and the Badgers were more than well represented.

Wisconsin tied Michigan State as the second-most represented team on Athlon’s first team All-Big Ten list with four players among the offense, defense and specialists. Only reigning national champion Ohio State had more players, with nine total on the first team.

The Badgers were represented by running back Corey Clement and Tyler Marz on offense. Defensively UW got linebacker Vince Biegel and safety Michael Caputo on the first team.

Overall, the Badgers had 10 players make Athlon’s preseason lists. UW got center Dan Voltz and kicker Rafael Gaglianone on the second team, while cornerback Darius Hillary and wide receiver Alex Erickson were named to the third team. Hillary’s cornerback mate Sojourn Shelton was named to the fourth team, as was linebacker Joe Schobert.

Hard to have any qualms about those players making the list coming in to the season. It will be interesting to see how a name like Tanner McEvoy at safety and Joel Stave at quarterback fit in to the mix by the end of the season.
