UW begins looking ahead to 2017 QB recruiting with first offers

Things are going to be very different at quarterback over the next few years for the University of Wisconsin. Love, hate or indifferent towards Joel Stave, it is still going to be strange not seeing him behind center for the Badgers.

It also means the future could be now or wait one more year should senior quarterback Bart Houston win the job. Given that, the Badgers recruiting at the position now and going forward is going to be vital.

Wisconsin simply needs to hit on the recruiting trail, and while the 2016 recruiting class already has its quarterback — Badger legacy Kare Lyles — the rest of the future is wholly unknown at the position.

However, the picture began to become much clearer on Wednesday, as the Badgers began to put out their first offers to class of 2017 recruits. In total, Wisconsin gave out two offers at the quarterback position today, and three overall have been offered since November.

The biggest name of the bunch is in a state the Badgers have had some interesting ties to before — Georgia. UW offered 4-star quarterback Davis Mills out of Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Ga.

At 6-3, 192 pounds, Mills possesses classic pro-style quarterback skills and is currently rated as the No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the 2017 class by 247Sports. He was offered back in late November per 247Sports.

Mills completed 60 percent of his passes (169-282) for 2,821 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, he also possesses good athletic ability, rushing for 577 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Wisconsin then offered another 247Sports 4-star (3-star composite) quarterback, this time going out to Woodbury Forest (Va.) to offer Lindell Stone.

Stone, a 6-2, 205-pound prospect, is the No. 12-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2017 class and holds offers from the like of Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Purdue, UCLA, Indiana, and West Virginia, Wake Forest, and Virginia amongst a host of schools.

As Badger247 was first to report, Wisconsin also went down south to extend an offer to 3-star quarterback Myles Brennan, a prospect out of Bay Saint Louis (Miss.) St Stanislaus.

Interestingly enough, Flood reports that it wasn’t head coach Paul Chryst making the direct offer, but offensive grad assistant Jon Budmayr doing the in-person offer after seeing Brennan throw.

Brennan currently holds offers from California, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Wake Forest, and West Virginia along with the Badgers amongst his list.

He also happens to have a crazy stat line, completing 62.3 percent of his passes for 5,248 yards (349.9 yards per game) and 53 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. In just two seasons of varsity football, Brennan has already passed for more than 11,000 yards and 100 touchdowns (117 to be exact).

It is very early in the process for all three, but at least we now have an idea of the players to keep an eye on for Badgers quarterback recruiting in the 2017 class.
