Spring football is all about change, such is the nature of college football. But, for the Wisconsin Badgers there will be a bit of unexpected change to the depth chart on both sides of the ball. That’s because according to an interview with Mike Lucas for UWBadgers.com, head coach Paul Chryst indicated that two linemen are leaving the program.
Lucas indicated that senior defensive lineman Arthur Goldberg and offensive lineman Walker Williams have chosen to leave the program:
On the defensive line, the Badgers will have to absorb the loss of Arthur Goldberg (14 career starts), who has given up football because of a head injury. Likewise, offensive lineman Walker Williams has been forced to do the same thing. Williams started seven games last season.
Goldberg was expected to be in the mix at defensive end in his final season at UW after starting 11 games there last year, but with the emergence of Conor Sheehey and the experience in Chikwe Obasih and Alec James give Wisconsin plenty of depth and experience to absorb his loss.
Williams has battled numerous injuries in his time in Madison after coming to UW as a 4-star recruit out of the state of Washington. Given the experience and versatility of younger players on the roster, Williams’ loss is equally easy to overcome on the field. UW now has six offensive linemen that started at least one game last season and an impressive redshirt freshman class ready to push those players for starting positions.
However, the losses in experience off the field from Goldberg and Williams could be huge.
UW starts spring practice on March 12 and the annual spring game will be on April 23.
