Wisconsin’s Isaac Jordan’s first loss of the 2015-16 campaign came in the final match of the season.
The redshirt junior saw his record drop to 29-1 as he fell to Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer 6-2 in the 165 pound championship at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Saturday night in New York City.
Jordan and Dieringer, a Port Washington, Wis. native who entered the bout with a perfect 32-0 record, went toe-to-toe in front of a sold out crowd of 19,270 at Madison Square Garden.
Dieringer struck first with a takedown midway through the opening period. He held his 2-0 lead through the end of the first and accumulated 1:26 of riding time along the way.
An escape and a takedown in the second period put Dieringer up 5-0.
Jordan scored his first point of the match with an escape late in the frame. He tallied another escape with 30 seconds remaining in the match, but that was all of the scoring he was able to muster.
The win gave Dieringer a third NCAA title to cap his career.
Jordan’s runner-up finish was the best showing by a Wisconsin wrestler at the NCAA Tournament since Tyler Graff finished second at 133 pounds in 2014.
For the third time in his career, Jordan achieved All-American status. He finished seventh at 157 pounds in 2014 and did the same at 165 a season ago.
