Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I could care less about Phil Hughes or his new contract. The Mets need to spend their money on about 57 other things before they need to worry about starting pitching. And if they are going to worry about starting pitching, you could do better than Phil Hughes at the price he commanded from the Minnesota Twins for three seasons.
But you know this offseason was not how it was presented in the past when the Minnesota Twins are spending gobs of money while the New York Freakin' Mets are playing the role of Johnny Prudent and sticking the revenue sharing money in their pockets … all while being spooked by moderately sized contracts and being interested in the likes of Armando "Bargain Bin" Galarraga. Prudent might be the play when it comes to Hughes. But it isn't going to make people feel any better as we're waving at all the ships leaving the harbor while only sending out control signals for the tugboats.
It may be for the best and all … but please let there be a plan that doesn't involve the words "conceivable", "patience", or "punt" on display in the next two weeks or so. That's all I ask.
