The Fault Lies Not In Our Stars, But In Ourselves

Matt Kemp is complaining about being a backup in Los Angeles after being benched for five straight games. The inside scoop is that Kemp was trying out his Halloween costume for this season, which is a Juan Lagares jersey. Thus Don Mattingly immediately benched Kemp thinking he was Lagares. The Mets might have been able to trade for Kemp now that he is somewhat expendable. But I did not go to the game tonight, nor did I buy the meatball sliders. Because of which, the Mets will not be trading for Matt Kemp. At least according to Sandy Alderson. So it’s my fault that we’re stuck with Bobby Abreu in right field. I’m terribly sorry.

But at least the Mets bounced back from the fun that was Memorial Day to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2. Vic Black got the win, which is ironic considering we all figured he couldn’t do much worse than the guy he replaced, Jose Valverde. He wasn’t, although he walked two in an inning and a third. We’re thinking that Black actually taught Curtis Jackson his cutter grip, resulting in this:

Juan Lagares actually started his seventh straight game and went 2 for 5 with two ribbies. Hopefully this is a sign that the nonsense of a couple of weeks ago is now well behind us. Now its Chris Young who gets to lose playing time to Bobby Abreu. (And how bad do you have to be for that?) Speaking of the outfield, Eric Young Jr. is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile Collin McHugh is leading the A.L. in batting average against (.195), and tied for the lead in WHIP with 0.98. That trade looks a little less lopsided now.
