What does Jacob deGrom have to do to get a win around here? Although he unraveled a bit in the 7th, he was masterful through 6 inning of work. In four Major League starts, deGrom has yet to earn his first W. Similar to Ron Darling’s rookie year in 1983, deGrom has come up on the short end each time. Either there was a lack of run support or the bullpen simply blew the game late. On a day when even RUBEN TEJADA hits a home run, the bullpen could not hold a one-run lead in the 9th. Our old friend Marlon Byrd hit a lead-off double to get him in scoring position when Domonic Brown drove him in to tie the game at 4. deGrom had only given up one hit going into the 7th. Their only hit was a single by Chase Utley in the 4th. With only 89 pitches, he was set to go a full 7 innings, until a single, a walk and a 3-run chip shot by none other than, Ryan Howard. He remained in the game to get Byrd out swinging. He exited with a 1 run lead after pitching 6 1/3. Usually I would be flipping chairs and blaming Terry Collins for leaving a pitcher in there for a batter too long, but deGrom is a kid. I was fine with him being left out there. The only way to learn how to pitch out of trouble is if he is given the opportunity, looking at videos in the clubhouse will not do justice. If this was Gee or Colon, that’s different. deGrom settled down quickly after the Howard home run. He finished with a career high 11 punch outs and was dominant for most of the afternoon. But, was only good enough for a no decision as the Mets for a second straight night went into extra innings.
Buddy Carlyle made his Mets debut. If you haven’t heard, Rafael Montero was sent down to Las Vegas after giving up seven hits and four runs, three earned, in 3 2/3 innings last night. Carlyle pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Ruben Tejada had quite a good day going 3-4, getting on base 5 times with 2 walks, driving in 2 runs and scoring twice. He broke the longest active home run drought in the majors with 552 plate appearances. But, can he get on base consistently? Probably not. The Phillies are just that bad of a ball club. David Wright drove him home to score the go-ahead run in the 14th inning. The game was in the hands of Carlos Torres who notched his second save of the season, which wasn’t easy. He had the the tying run at second and the winning run at first with Chase Ugly at the plate with two gone.

Utley is that last guy I want up their in that situation, but Torres stuck him out swinging. I know I am not the only one to have this reaction after the win:
On a side note, while I was listening to the game on WOR, Howie Rose mentioned a get together with all NYC play-by-play announcers. Wondering if that included collegiate sports, I wanted to know where my invitation was. Apparently the only person that didn’t go was Sam Rosen from the Eastern Conference Champion New York Rangers. That is all I will say about the Rangers on this blog…ever, due to my commitment with the Devils. Anyways I found out why I wasn’t invited:
@CMontanezWBCR Sorry, they had to cut off the guest list. #Snobs

At least WOR apologized. I guess there is no room for broadcasters from Brooklyn College.
