There was much to rejoice about in the wake of the Mets’ 7-4 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday … a loss in which Adrian Gonzalez had five RBI, including a three run home run. First bit of good news is the return of Jacob deGrom. While his stat line didn’t look particularly great, he only gave up five hits and two walks in six innings. And while he was victimized by the long ball by Gonzalez, grading him on the curve of having missed two starts with a shoulder problem worked out all right for deGrom. I liked how he had a clean sixth after struggling in two innings, and I liked how his arm didn’t explode at any time during the game. Yeah, my standards are low. But I’m looking for copper plated linings here.
The second bit of good news regards David Wright. Yes, you heard right … David Wright. He went 0-for-5 with two K’s, and two double plays. Why on earth is this good news? Simple … because a night like this just makes painfully clear that Wright is clearly not at 100% and that there is a better than average chance he comes back to normal next season. Of course the other side of the coin is that you know … you know there will be a media scrum on a back field at Port St. Lucie this coming February featuring either Sandy Alderson or Golden Sperm Wilpon where they will be asked “do you think you’ve done enough to help the lineup during the off-season” after the Mets do nothing except get a retread outfielder that has been retired for five seasons … or Jeff Francoeur. And the reply will be something like: “Well, we feel that with David coming back healthy this season that he counts as our big acquisition.” Bookmark this page and recall it in March. And then keep all your weapons and sharp objects hidden away and out of reach when you recall it.
Then there’s this bit of information:
Terry Collins won’t give David Wright a day off. “He’s a star. Stars don’t need that.”
— Anthony Witrado (@awitrado) August 24, 2014
Of course. Because stars have special healing powers that regular players just don’t possess. Stars are “different animals” than mere mortals. Isn’t that right, Snoop?
Dear God.
