The Nationals and Rays were innocent bystanders as the Mets came along and ruined their trade, which would have sent Ian Desmond to Tampa in exchange for Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar (who eventually went to Oakland for Boog Powell … not that Boog Powell.) All Tampa needed was a big market team to take Desmond off their hands for a couple of prospects. Unfortunately for Tampa, they still think the New York Mets are a big market team.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
The Rays wanted two prospects from a list of three which included Noah Syndergaard. To get back a shortstop with only one year of control left for Syndergaard and one other good prospect would have been crazy. So in that respect it’s a good thing this didn’t happen. But the Mets didn’t let one year of control stand in their way when it came to getting Johan Santana from the Twins, as the Mets had the ability to sign Santana to a long term deal (albeit one that the Mets of 2012 couldn’t wait to get rid of … but still. Now, you know how I feel about Troy Tulowitzki. Too big a risk between injuries, and the Rockies wanted value in return for the hitter he is at Coors Field. Desmond? Numbers aren’t as good as Tulowitzki’s … and that’s just Tulowitzki’s road numbers. But I will say that Desmond is probably a lower risk going forward. There’s risk everywhere, but he’s durable (over 150 games in four of the last five seasons), and his numbers at Citi Field are encouraging. (Then again, he’s a National hitting at Citi Field. Of course he hits well there.)
Is he worth Syndergaard and another good prospect? Not for one year. Is Desmond worth Syndergaard and another good prospect if the Mets were able to sign Desmond to a long term deal as they did with Santana before that trade? Sadly we’ll never find out because the Mets spent all their money on Michael Cuddyer. And by all their money I clearly mean the extra money that the Mets got from the gargantuan television deal and not a penny more. And this is why people are frustrated, and this is why fans are raising money to put up billboards begging the Wilpons to sell the team.
