Game Countdown – 9/2/09: Rock the Kaz-bah – Angels @ Mariners

The day has finally come.  Scott Kazmir will be making his first start as an Angel tonight.  Let the rejoicing begin.

Angels parade

Is it too much to throw a parade for Kazmir’s debut?

Already Kaz has his work cut out for him, drawing King Felix Hernandez as his starting counterpart, as well as being asked to prevent the Angels from dropping this series to their divisional foe.  Fortunately, beating the AL West is one of the things that Kazmir does best.  In six career starts, Scott is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA against the Seattle Mariners, with five of those starts coming in Safeco Field, making him just the man for the job.

Really, there is little that Kazmir could do tonight to dampen the euphoria surrounding his arrival.  Even a lousy start will simply be chalked up to him being nervous and trying to impress his new team.  Conversely, if Kazmir shuts down Seattle tonight, there is a very real chance that he will be declared the god-king of Orange County.  Either way, it is must see TV today.  Too bad the game is at the bizarre time of 3:40 PM.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (78-53) @ Seattle Mariners (69-64)

Starters: LAA – Scott Kazmir (8-7, 5.92 ERA)  SEA – Felix Hernandez (13-5, 2.77 ERA)

Game Info: 3:40 PM PT TV-Fox Sports West, Radio-KLAA 830 AM, KFWB, KWKW 1330 AM

THREE Questions:

TWO Predictions:

  • Kazmir finishes the cycle and throws a complete game tonight, making it one full turn through the Angel rotation with each starter registering a quality start.
  • Erick Aybar atones for his gaffes last night and collects three hits and at least two RBIs.

ONE Wish:

  • I wish the Angels would just start intentionally trying to hit the ball at Adrian Beltre to see if they can make him flinch after his horrid testicle injury a few weeks ago.

ZERO Tolerance for… Franklin Gutierrez.  The Mariner centerfielder inexplicably gave the Halos fits last night.  Nothing personal against Gutierrez, but that just can’t be allowed.
