Game Rewind – 5/3/10: Oh the Horror – Red Sox 17, Angels 8

An Angel loss to the Red Sox in which we were witness to the horror.

Red Sox 17, Angels 8

Los Angeles Angels of AWESOMENESS

  • Well, at least Scioscia finally put Morales in the four-hole like I said he should way at the start of the season.  Rivera just wasn’t giving him the protection he needed and it paid off with three hits tonight.
  • Ummm, let’s see, what else can we consider a positive out of this train wreck.  Hey, Jason Bulger didn’t give up a run.  That’s good, right?

Los Angeles Angels of FAIL

  • I think we all kind of knew that Joe Saunders was going to get lit up tonight, but what pushed this from a bad night to a straight up horror show was the work of Matt Palmer.  With him getting hit even harder than Saunders, the Halos just lost their fallback plan for replacing Saundo in the rotation.  Best case scenario for them now is that Sean O’Sullivan or Trevor Reckling can be forced into action before they are really ready but still find a way to succeed anyway.
  • Just when I was about to suggest that Sosh look at giving Brian Stokes a bigger role in the pen, he goes and brings out his gas can.  Now he is a lot closer to losing his roster spot than he is to getting a promotion from the mop-up job.
  • The Angels were even a disaster on the bases tonight.  How do you let Victor Martinez throw out two runners?  The guy only threw out nine runners all of last season, for crying out loud!!  And what the hell was Torii Hunter thinking trying to steal second before Clay Buchholz even made a move?  When you are down 5-0 you can’t be taking dumb risks like that.  Every baserunner counts so much in that situation, at least wait until he makes some kind of move, even if it is to first base.
  • Let’s just say that when you allow the first homers of the year to two different opponent players, you probably didn’t have a good night.
  • This was a pretty horrible loss and isn’t going to do much for the Angels’ confidence, but we should all be careful to make too much of it.  These kind of games happen to everyone at some point.  What will really matter is how the Halos do (or do not) bounce back tomorrow.  If they get embarrassed again, then we can start really panicking.

I just don’t know what to say about Joe Saunders anymore.  He just keeps getting worse and worse and worse.  And it is only going to keep getting worse because nobody knows what is wrong.  Joe says it is his mechanics, but if that were the case wouldn’t he have corrected it by now?  Maybe it is his shoulder again, but I can’t believe he would hide an injury again after getting scolded for it last season.  I think we just need to face the stark reality that he needs to removed from the rotation before he does any more damage.  Send him to Triple-A, send him to the bullpen, send him behind the shed to be taken out, I don’t care.  Just get him out of the rotation and do it now.  I hear Jarrod Washburn is looking for work.
