The Pittsburgh Pirates manage the winter blahs by watching sports, working out, gifting swag and “gearing up” for the 2017 season
With 57 days until pitchers and catchers report to Bradenton, it’s easy to see the winter doldrums are setting in. Players are getting ready for the holidays with their families, many of them have returned from vacations to far flung locales and even more are now ramping up their workouts and prep for next season. But otherwise, not a lot is going on.
Jared Hughes was on baby watch 10 days ago, so he may or may not be changing diapers and celebrating a new addition right now…
Yep, on baby watch. We are 'expecting an arrival' very soon. As opposed to it already being an 'expected arrival'…no baby quite yet. https://t.co/NH7gZyyx7E

The guys are spending time supporting other professional athletes by hanging out at a variety of sporting events.ย Steven Brault took in a hockey game in San Diego…
Nothing more American than listening to the National Anthem on guitar while drinking bud light at a hockey game. #Gullsnation #Merica

Jameson taillon took in some football in LA…

…and newly acquired pitcher Brady Dragmire took in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas (something tells me he’d enjoy some time at Mercer Ranch).

Speaking of Mercer Ranch, the team from Root Sports recently paid a visit to Jordy Mercer’s little piece of heaven on Earth for a special feature on an upcoming Inside Pirates Baseball.

And while AJ Schugel didn’t make it back to Pittsburgh this winter, he’s geared up for some quality time in the 412 in 2017!

Speaking of gear, check out the awesome Pirates jersey cake Elias Diaz had recently…(pay no attention the the crying baby…)

Josh Harrison is rocking some gear with a cause. His hat is in support of Love Your Melon, which is an apparel brand on a mission to put a hat on every child battling cancer in America and support the fight against pediatric cancer (find more info at @loveyourmelon).

If he’s still in Cincinnati, he’s definitely in need of a warm hat right now – even though this photo is from four days ago – it’s cold out there right now!

Not to be outdone in the threads department, Starling Marte continues his complete domination of the fashion world on Instagram with his latest white bottoms look:

Although Francisco Cervelli, who paired his white jeans with a leather moto jacket, is giving the quick outfielder a run for his money (plus he gets bonus points for photographic creativity).

The Pirates CAREavan
Every year during the off-season, the Pittsburgh Pirates load up some buses with players, coaches and lots of swag to hit the road and get out into the community. From helping kids shop for coats to thanking our veterans for their service, the guys spend a little time giving back to the people of western Pennsylvania who give so much support to the team during the season.

Great couple of days in Pittsburgh for the Care-A-Van! Don't know about y'all (yinz) but being up there has me fired up for next season!

And while I’m not sure this was part of the official Pittsburgh Pirates CAREavan, Chad Kuhl was out and about with his beautiful girlfriend (and Miss Delaware, natch) Amanda, bringing joy to folks out of state…

Of all the posts about the CAREavan, however, Nick Kingham’s sums it up the best…it really isn’t what these guys get – it’s what they are allowed to give that makes an impact on them.

And finally today, of all of the honors professional baseball players can have, there is none higher than when your likeness is used as a prop with the family Elf on the Shelf.
