The Story: The Angels are downplaying their chances at acquiring a starting pitcher before the trade deadline.
The Monkey Says: That is exactly what I would say too if I wanted to gain trade leverage. Everyone thinks the Angels HAVE to acquire starting pitching, so other GMs have them over a barrel. But if you publically state you are leaning towards standing pat, you weaken that stance… assuming nobody calls their bluff.
The Story: Chris Iannetta and Vernon Wells, especially, are nearing returns to the active roster.
The Monkey Says: Wells tweeted that he’d be back in Anaheim on Friday, which is roughly around the time that I felt a great disturbance in the Force. He is certain to be activated this weekend at some point, if not Friday. The Angels are going to have to figure out his role though, but they’ve intimated it will be a small one, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he forms something of a platoon with kendrys Morales.
The Story: It is believed Marlins SP Josh Johnson would prefer a trade to either the Angels or Rangers.
The Monkey Says: This means absolutely nothing. First off, the Marlins don’t seem likely to trade him. They are asking for the kind of trade package the Braves gave up for Mark Teixeira several years ago. That trade worked out so poorly for the Braves, since the massive prospect package they gave up grew up to form the core of the current Ranger team, that it is often used as a cautionary tale. Assuming the Fish do move Johnson, his preferences don’t matter at all since he has absolutely zero trade veto power. He goes where they send him, no questions asked.
The Story: The Angels are reportedly trying to trade Vernon Wells.
The Monkey Says: Except they don’t want to eat almost all of the money. In other words, the Angels aren’t going to trade Vernon Wells.
The Story: The Angels released minor league pitcher Trevor Bell.
The Monkey Says: That’s a clown transaction, bro. Because, you know, his grandfather was Bozo the Clown. Get it? Ah, nevermind. Anyways, he opens up another spot on the 40-man roster (they have three openings now, but Wells will take one when he is activated), which certainly leads one to believe the Halos are planning on filling said spot via trade.
The Monkey Says: See? What did I tell you. This is why Dipoto is trying to act like they can fix their rotation from within.
The Story: Is Jean Segura a future star or trade bait?
The Monkey Says: Can he be both? The latest rumors have a lot of teams turning their attention more towards Segura than any other asset. In fact, there was one report suggesting the Brewers prefer him to Garrett Richards, which is good because I don’t think the Angels are actually willing to move Richards.
The Story: Jim Bowden says a Zack Greinke for Segura and Richards trade makes a lot of sense.
The Monkey Says: Like I just said, I don’t think the Angels are going to trade Richards and I have an even harder time believing they’d move him for a rental. If they made that deal and the lost Greinke via free agency, they’d be screwed as they would have two rotation slots to fill and no real viable internal options that would be ready to step in.
