Holy sweet mother of Jesus can you really believe this game happened? Every Angels faithful today expected an absolute disaster out of Ervin Santana’s start against the Rangers, and why wouldn’t you expect the worst? While he did end up putting up a pretty decent start he did still held on tightly to the good old Santana tendancies. Every time the Angels pulled themselves ahead of the Rangers Santana gave the lead right back up, thankfully the 15 out limit was there to to limit the damage though he did manage a couple fairly harmless innings near the end of him start.
But nobody cares about that, everyone cares about the fireworks graciously supplied by the Angels for all the fans in Arlington looking for a show. They even managed to not totally screw up when being televised nationally on ESPN!
Hoorah!!!
Game Recap
- I’m not even gonna screw around with this one, I’m gonna jump straight into the meat. Kendrys Morales! Holy jesus he just EXPLODED today! For a guy that has been on a prolonged power streak, hitting only 3 home runs in his last 127 plate appearances, he really did manage to carry the team on his shoulders today. Mike Trout helped keep the Angels in the game with an early home run to bail Santana out of his troubles, but Kendrys Morales helped give the team distance the eternally threatening Rangers lineup. On a normal day the 8 runs given up by the Santana and Williams would have kept the team far from victory if it wasn’t the 6 RBI’s and 2 HR’s in the 6th inning that give the Angels healthy distance from the Rangers. Oh, and would you know it, Kendrys Morales is the 3rd player in MLB history and the 2nd in Angels franchise history to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same inning. Have a day why don’t you.
- Ervin Santana may have not thrown a gem tonight, but he pitched well enough to extend his stay with the Angels. It sounds a lot like Santana is either on the way to the bullpen or maybe even another team. It’s gotten bad enough that Mike Scioscia publicly stated that Santana has earned the right to at least one more start. Yeesh, sounds like the leash on Santana is dangerously close to being pulled into Scioscia’s doghouse forever, or possibly some other managers doghouse. Santana ended up giving up 3 runs in 5 IP while only walking 1, earning himself the win. Oh, and to make things even sweeter Santana lowered his ERA! To 5.97! Whoopie!!!!
- Williams piggybacked off Santana’s start with 4 inning of his own, though his start was far from the quality that Santana’s start had, and that ain’t sayin much. Williams has looked good out of the ‘pen over his last few outings, with no earned runs given up in 6 IP. He’s never really shown that he can do well in Arlington and today was no difference at all, as shown by his 5 runs given up in those 4 IP tonight. Williams is going to have to get his feet back under him if he’s going to get his start job back, and actually get to keep it. Though with Richards on the rise, and with his higher upside, it’s more likely he’ll get the better share of the starting gigs than Williams. The 5th spot is better for developing young talent anyway, at least in my book.
Halo Hero
This is what you get when you remind me of the potential MVP monster he was shaping up to be pre-injury.
and for not having that funky goatee anymore.
