The Story: A look at called pitchouts, their frequency and success rate.
The Monkey Says: This is great because it validates my gut feeling from watching games that Scioscia both calls a lot of pitchouts, but guesses correctly a lot too. What isn't so great is that it doesn't seem to matter that he does because it ultimately still costs the Angels over the course of the season, granted, not very much, but it costs them.
The Story: The Angels have released Jo-Jo Reyes so he can go sign in Korea.
The Monkey Says: This isn't a big deal since the Angels finally have some starting pitching depth now, but still it hurts to lose a guy who, while not very good, at least has big league experience. And, yes, it is a horribly slow news day when a non-roster invite leaving the team to sign in Korea is considered a top story.
The Story: The Sporting News declares the Angels the favorite to win the 2013 World Series.
The Monkey Says: Oh, well, now they have to win it all. I'd feel horrible if the Halos made the fine folks at The Sporting News look bad.
The Story: A primer on how salary arbitration works technically and practically.
The Monkey Says: As I mentioned yesterday, the Angels should be fine this season. Jason Vargas is probably the only player who is in line to make enough such that things might get contentious, but I kind of doubt it. We'll no more when salary figures are exchanged on Friday, assuming any of the four remaining Angel players eligible for arbitration haven't settled by then.
The Monkey Says: This was reported months ago, but they had never explained what was taking its place. I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn that very expensive seats are taking the place of the press box. Frankly, I'm surprised more teams don't do this, especially since fewer and fewer media members actually cover games in person anymore and it has probably been decades since giving the press one of the best seats in the house was necessary.
The Story: Mike Trout is ranked as the best left fielder in baseball.
The Monkey Says: No surprise here, other than how weird it still feels to consider Trout a left fielder.
The Story: Josh Hamilton is ranked as the fifth best right fielder in baseball.
The Monkey Says: I really want to object to this, but given his inexplicably awful finish to last season, I don't know that I can.
The Story: The Inland Empire 66ers announced their coaching staff for the 2013 season.
