The Monkey Says: Dipoto was busy yesterday. Enright clearly just didn't belong in the majors so seeing him DFA'd is now surprise. Roth was just a victim of circumstance as he was going to be burnt for a few days, so the Angels demoted him in favor of someone who could pitch right away. Brasier obviously won't be much help and Buckner (no relation) is probably just around as a long man but he could be called upon to start if Tommy Hanson needs to miss another start. The fact that the called him up now suggests that they don't think that will be necessary. Oh, and Buckner makes it 21 different pitchers to grace the Angels' active roster.
The Monkey Says: Coello just became very interesting to me. I can't say I've paid much attention in his appearances since they have largely been in garbage time, so I thought he threw a normal splitfinger. This through is pretty damn cool and might actually be something that allows him to have some success as probably nobody in the league has seen that pitch before.
The Story: What kind of contract would Josh Hamilton get now if he hit free agency?
The Monkey Says: Three years seems about right, but I have a hard time seeing him still getting a $25 million AAV. He has shown enough decline in the last year that I think his value has to be hurt quite badly. I know he is a unique player, but that is a lot of money to sink into a guy who has played 40 games at this low level of production after having a wildly erratic half season the year before.
The Story: Sean Burnett is expected to rejoin the Angels by this coming Tuesday.
The Monkey Says: That would be welcome news given that Burnett had been one of the few bright spots in the bullpen this year.
The Story: Kevin Jepsen is nearing a rehab assignment but an exact return date is not yet known.
The Monkey Says: Not quite as good news since Jepsen was a disaster before he hit the DL but even if he doesn't rebound back to his 2012 second half form, he is still an improvement over the likes of Mark Lowe and Ryan Brasier.
The Story: It is time for Mike Scioscia to return home to manage the Dodgers.
The Monkey Says: Well, there is that little problem of him still being employed by the Angels. I can very much see Scioscia moving on after the season, but I kind of hope that Moreno works out a deal to trade Scioscia to the Phillies or Mets or Pirates just to spite the Dodgers.
The Story: Josh Hamilton seems to be struggling with fastballs more than any other pitch.
The Monkey Says: That could be a symptom of him being up in his own head and being hesitant (by his standards) at the plate, but really it just screams that he is losing bat speed.
The Story: How every team has the same "magic" as the Yankees.
The Monkey Says: The Palmer selection is a very nice pull, but would've much rather gotten some nice Ben Weber nostalgia going.
The Story: How do these starting pitchers still have jobs?
