The June 26th, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Vargas to miss a month with surgery, Bourjos ready to play, Halos acquire Cowgill and much more…
The Story: Jason Vargas will have surgery to remove his blood clot and will miss 3-4 weeks.
The Monkey Says: That is actually great news. He won't be able to throw for two weeks, but the team is hoping he can bounce right back once he is cleared to resume playing. The additional bonus here is that Vargas should be able to get in a start or two before the trade deadline, should the Halos want to go down that road.
The Story: Peter Bourjos hopes to be back in the lineup today.
The Monkey Says: Another bullet dodged. Not only do the Angels get his bat back, but they also get to rid themselves of J.B. Shuck's circus act in left field.
The Story: The Angels acquired outfielder Collin Cowgill for outfield prospect Kyle Johnson.
The Monkey Says: They also moved Ryan Madson to the 60-day DL, but that was really just for housekeeping and has no impact on his return date… whenever that is. Cowgill is depth at this point, giving the Angels a right-handed reserve outfielder in the event they need one and is likely just a guy that Jerry Dipoto liked back from his days in Arizona where Cowgill was drafted. He'll report to Triple-A, so send all of your "more Cowgill" jokes to Salt Lake. As for Johnson, he's earned some notice because he is stealing bases like crazy, but was a 25th round pick in 2012 and isn't considered much of a prospect.
The Story: Baseball Prospectus released their mid-season Top 50 prospects list which includes no Angels.
The Monkey Says: I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
The Story: The Cubs designated closer Carlos Marmol for assignment.
The Monkey Says: Seeing how the Halos tried to trade for him in the failed Dan Haren deal last winter, it is possible that Dipoto could make another run at him, though he certainly won't cost much if anything at this point. Marmol is probably washed up, but what do the Angels have to lose at this point?
The Story: Hank Conger is considered a possible trade piece at the coming deadline.
The Monkey Says: It is just speculation, but I don't buy it. Conger has acquitted himself nicely this year and I imagine the Angels would be more inclined to trade Iannetta than Conger. I doubt they trade either though since there does not appear to be any faith in John Hester to hold onto the back-up catcher gig.
The Story: The Battle of Los Angeles featuring fretting over Arte Moreno's recent interview.
The Monkey Says: Sorry, Riley, the Halos are totally moving to downtown LA for the 2017 season. Get used to the idea now.
The Story: The Angel season has turned into a trip to the Haunted Mansion.
The Monkey Says: Get it? Because the Angels play in Anaheim. And Disneyland is in Anaheim. And the Haunted Mansion is a thing at Disneyland. That's why Dwyre gets the big bucks!
