The Monkey Says: There is no doubt the Angels will be interested, the question is at what price point does their interest begin to wane?
The Story: Who needs Masahiro Tanaka the most?
The Monkey Says: Hey, look! The Angels again. I'm sensing a theme here. Unfortunately, need does not equal ability to actually sign someone. I remain unconvinced that the Halos will be still be strong players for Tanaka once he starts whittling down the offers.
The Story: Chris Volstad is going to sign with the Korean baseball league.
The Monkey Says: The Halos inked him as minor league depth, but it looks like they will need to find someone else as Volstad likely got more money to pitch overseas. Volstad was not good, but it always hurts to lose starting pitching depth.
The Story: A trade idea to send Mike Trout to the Red Sox.
The Monkey Says: Trout trade ideas tend to drive me crazy, but I can tolerate the ones that are made in earnest and with the full knowledge that the premise is a silly one. This has all the going for it, but the proposal is still covered in a nice, creamy sauce of NOPE. Bogaerts is a great piece, but the two non-elite pitching prospects pretty much kill the deal. I'm also not super excited about trading for the privilege of paying Dustin Pedroia $110 million. He is a great player, but the Angels aren't going to trade Trout for a 30-year old with a nine-figure contract. I would think that any trade of Trout would be for nothing but cost-controlled players and possibly even finding a team to eat a bad contract like Josh Hamilton's.
