Boxscore Breakdown Game #2: Groundhog Angels – Mariners 8, Angels 3

BobbyV

Here we go again. Another Angels team hoping to be a contender getting out to a distressingly slow start to the season. It all just feels so familiar. 2014 is shaping up to be the season of the Groundhog Angels.

Run Expectancy Rundown

Hamilton and Ibanez and… oh, that’s it, huh? Well, no wonder they couldn’t score much. A special shoutout to Howie Kendrick for his GIDP and David Freese for getting picked off. Heaven forbid the Angels don’t short circuit their only rallies.

Once again, Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley lead the way, this time with a big assist from Brad Miller. Cano was held in check, but it came at the expense of setting up Smoak for another big day.

Starting Pitcher Scores

C.J. was not good. Erasmo was pretty good. That’s really they story of this game. In fact, Ramirez really just made one bad pitch, so the gap could’ve been a lot worse.

Bullpen Battle

Scale matters here. Kohn got taken deep, but the game was pretty much over while Shoemaker was able to pitch well for 2.1 innings, but all he did was keep the game from getting out of hand.

(fart sounds)

Game Flow

After the Smoak double, the Angels were in a dire situation. The mounted a mini-comeback via the Ibanez homer, but Brad Miller’s longball response nipped that right in the bud. That was all she wrote.

Not being able to have success against a largely left-handed Mariner lineup is not how you want to start your season. Thanks for nothing, CJ..
